The Root Chakra - Muladhara

The root chakra is comprised of what grounds us to the stability in our lives. This is the chakra where we feel safe and well-taken care of. Here is where our basic needs have to be met such as food, water, shelter, and safety, as well as our more emotional needs such as letting go of fear and understanding our purpose. When these needs are met, we feel grounded and safe, and we tend to worry less. This is the first of the physical chakras, largely responsible for how safe and secure we feel. Balancing the root chakra creates the solid foundation for opening the chakras above. Imagine that you’re laying the foundation for a house in which you’re going to live for a long time. A solid foundation built on firm soil will provide us with the stability we need to create a strong, sturdy home.

If there is an imbalance in the root chakra you may experience anxiety disorders, fears, or nightmares. Physical imbalances may manifest as problems in the colon, with the bladder, with elimination, or with lower back, leg, or feet issues. In men, prostate problems may occur. Eating disorders may also be a sign of a root chakra imbalance.

When the root chakra is out of harmony there is an inability to trust nature. We also feel ungrounded, feel disconnected from Mother Earth, have issues around tribal beliefs or family wounds, don’t feel secure in the knowledge of our most basic and primal needs are being met, function out of fear and feeling unsafe.

When the root chakra is in harmony, we are profoundly connected to nature, feel grounded, trust in the natural laws, and are able to move with the ebb and flow of life. We also come from a place of understanding that we will always be provided for, that we are connected to our tribal consciousness and family in healthy ways, and we feel safe.

If you are dealing with a blocked root chakra and are looking for the best steps to clear it up quickly, I first suggest finding what grounds you. What brings you back down to earth? What can you do to feel closer to the earth? To feel more physically connected? For some this might be a meditation, listening to the sounds of nature and for others this may require being in that place. Some other things you can try include eating root vegetables, put your bare feet on the earth, spend time in nature, go for a walk, make some pottery (squish that earthy clay around in your hands!) Stomp your feet or just go outside and scream, either way your physical body is begging you to be more present. Step away from the screens, move around that pent up energy you have built up inside you, and maybe go rock hunting!

The Root Chakra is all about being grounded, feeling secure that your basic needs are being met, and feeling connected to your family and tribal consciousness in healthy ways. The most important thing you can do to help unlock the secrets hidden deep within your chakras is to initiate connection with the energy vortex within you.
